Law scholarship announced by inspirational women at the top of the field

A UNIVERSITY law scholarship in memory of Britain’s first female QC was unveiled by Cherie Booth on a visit to Liverpool yesterday.

Mrs Booth QC, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, gave a speech aimed at inspiring young women to go into the legal profession, at the Belvedere Academy, in Princes Park.

She was joined by Hilary Heilbron QC, daughter of the first female QC, Dame Rose Heilbron, a former Belvedere pupil.

Mrs Booth announced the scholarship, set up in Dame Heilbron’s memory, to pay for a girl from Belvedere wishing to go into the legal profession.

She said: “A school such as this gives girls the confidence to aim for anything they wish, all it takes is talent, focus and hard work, irrespective of gender.”

Head girl Kate Berry, who chaired the meeting of Years 10 to 13 pupils, along with classmates Danielle Harris and Catrin Owen, said: “It was an honour to meet the leading women in the field we want to go into. They are an inspiration to study a career in law.

“Rose Heilbron was an inspiration to Cherie’s generation, now Cherie is a role model to us as a woman and coming from Liverpool.”

Spokesperson for Belvedere, Mo Bosch, said: “It was a fantastic visit.”
