Football tournament for homeless groups

A FIVE-A-SIDE football competition for the homeless has been organised in Liverpool.

The Liverpool City Council-sponsored event will kick off next week with 12 five-a-side teams including the YMCA, Salvation Army and the Powerhouse Trust homeless organisation.

They will compete in knockout rounds before the final at the Peter Lloyd Leisure Centre in Tuebrook on September 19.

Councillor Marilyn Fielding said: “This is a great opportunity for homeless people to get together and work towards a common goal. Staff also get involved so it’s good for team work.”

Mervyn Lynch, a housing assessment officer for Liverpool City Counci said: “We started playing other hostels and organisations and the competition sprung from there. It’s now a regular fixture in our calendar.”
