Liverpool cathedral splendour wins hearts and votes of British public

Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral

LIVERPOOL’S Anglican Cathedral has been voted the nation’s third most popular historic site in a major TV poll, beating off competition from some more instantly recognisable names.

It came in ahead of places such as Hadrian’s Wall and York Minster in the rankings compiled by the Britain’s Best television show on UKTV.

Stonehenge claimed top spot, with HMS Victory taking second place in the listings, meaning the cathedral on St James Mount was voted as the most loved religious building in Britain by viewers.

Cathedral director of hospitality Eryl Parry said: “This result indicates the feelings our building evokes – it is not just bricks and mortar. It is loved and has engendered loyalty where people want to tell others.”

A television crew spent a day filming, and it is hailed on the competition website as “one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century with its high Gothic arches, almighty tower and giant organ – a place where drama is balanced by an overwhelming sense of peace.”

The competition pulled in more than 600,000 votes, and it is believed that the cathedral pulled in around 100,000.
