Hours-old baby found abandoned in garden

Baby Zack

A newborn baby was found abandoned in the garden of a house, police said today.

The boy was believed to be just hours old and had his umbilical cord still attached.

He was discovered in a garden in Delagoa Road, in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool by a member of the public at 11pm yesterday.

Named Zac by hospital staff, he was first taken to Fazakerley Hospital and was later transferred to Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

He weighs 8lbs 11 oz and was found wrapped in papers and a bag.

Det Sup Colin Leeman, of Merseyside Police, said: "The baby is in a healthy condition and is currently being cared for by hospital staff at the Liverpool Women's Hospital.

"I am very concerned about the welfare of the mother of the baby, and I would appeal to her to come forward as soon as possible so we can do what's best for both her and the baby.

"Medical staff at the hospital believe the baby is just hours old and he is healthy, but we want to find mum so that we can check on her welfare and make sure she is OK.

"Clearly this little boy needs his mum.

"I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who was in the area last night who may have seen something which could help us to identify mum to come forward."

House to house inquiries at taking place close to where Zac was found.
