CITIES such as Liverpool are dominating the overnight-stay market for holiday-makers in their own country.
Just two seaside resort towns – Blackpool and Scarborough – made it into a top 10 based on visits that involved at least one night and which was compiled by the VisitBritain organisation.
The other eight destinations in the top 10 were all big cities – headed by London which hosted 11 million overnight stays in 2006.
Manchester (2.49 million nights) was second and Liverpool ninth (1.25 million) in the table.
Laurence Bush, VisitBritain’s England marketing general manager, said: “The new city breaks campaign aims to remind domestic visitors of the range of city-based holidays available in England.”
