Hospital unveils the possible shape of things to come

THIS is the first picture of what could become the John Lennon Foundation for Child Health under plans for a £300m redevelopment of Alder Hey hospital.

The initial artist’s impressions of the foundation were unveiled at yesterday’s AGM, during which four options for the future of Alder Hey – including the planned Children’s Health Park – were discussed.

Chief executive Tony Bell admitted the design of the foundation’s building could change.

The John Lennon Foundation for Child Health will ensure pioneering research work will be co-ordinated under one umbrella organisation while at the same time enabling information to be shared globally.

Alder Hey has stated its preference for a £300m new-build scheme in Springfield Park that would see the demolition of most of the existing hospital, apart from Ronald McDonald House.

A spokesperson said: “Our vision of a Children’s Health Park is of a harmonious environment which provides opportunities for children to play, engage in arts-related activities and enjoy the landscape.”

A public consultation on the future of Alder Hey will take place over the next 12 months. Work could begin in 2010 and be completed by 2014, at the earliest.
