New university now among best

EDGE HILL University has been named among the nation’s top higher education institutions – just over a year after it was awarded university status.

The former teacher training college in West Lancashire is the only campus in the North West to be shortlisted for the prestigious University of the Year award.

Staff impressed judges at the Times Higher Educational Supplement, which runs the annual award, with their commitment to encouraging lifelong learning and widening participation in higher education to outside of the usual post A-level students.

Since Edge Hill received university status in May 2006, it has become the UK’s fastest growing university.

It also ranked in the top 20 English universities in the National Student Satisfaction Survey this year, which put Edge Hill top in the North West in several subjects.

The university’s high level of student satisfaction was thought to be a contributing factor in the University of the Year shortlist.

Those shortlisted for the award are seen as examples of best practice in higher education.

This year, 90% of UK universities entered in one or more of the 20 categories.

The award was won last year by the University of Nottingham.

Judges will look at each institution’s performance in research, teaching, access and business performance.

They will also assess specific evidence of any particularly bold and innovative initiatives which may have advanced the reputation of entrants.

Dr John Cater, chief executive of Edge Hill, said: “It is a real feather in our cap to be selected for such a coveted award.

“It would be a real accolade for the region to be Capital of Culture and home to the University of the Year.

“I’m absolutely delighted by this.

“I think we have a chance of winning for the quality of our learning and teaching, our aspiration to be a centre of excellence for widening participation and for the personal satisfaction of our students.

“Making the shortlist is a real measure of our peer esteem.”

Last year, Edge Hill was awarded the Times Higher Educational Award for the best financial support package for students.

The winner of the award will be announced on November 29 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
