St Helens hit by mystery stench

RESIDENTS were baffled by a foul smell which spread across St Helens yesterday.

Several reported an unusual “manure-like” stench in the air throughout the day but no-one could quite put their finger on where it was coming from.

Saufiane Hamdidou, manager of Le Frog bistro on George Street, said: “The air really stinks. I’ve no idea where it’s coming from but I can tell you it is not very pleasant at all.

“It’s not too bad when you’re indoors but when you go outside the smell really hits you – it’s horrible.

“It’s a lot like horse manure. Perhaps it’s coming down off a field or a farm.

“If it continues like this, I’ll be tempted to start wearing a mask.”

The Environment Agency said it was not making any investigations into the complaints.
