Resort’s nights set on fire in weekend spectacular

Southport fireworks

SIX tonnes of fireworks lit up the skies of Southport over the weekend in a three-day spectacular.

The colourful pyro-technics were showcased in front of 60,000 visitors as part of the British Musical Fireworks Championships.

Southport’s Kings Gardens, overlooking the Marine Lake, was the setting for the annual event which ended with a grand finale last night.

During the champion-ships, six top pyrotechnic companies from across the UK illuminated the skyline with displays choreographed to a backdrop of music.

First-time entrants Phoenix Fireworks were crowned the winners of the event after their performance on Saturday night, which judges said best matched the display to the music.

Last night, organiser Carolyn Lowry said the event had been a “fantastic success”.

“We want to do something even more special next year, and link in with Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year.

“It is great for South-port to be the host of the show.

“The crowd really enjoyed the spectacle and I know people will have been watching from afar. The weather was perfect, which always helps.”

Each night saw two exciting musical displays from the UK’s top profes-sional firework compan-ies, casting magnificent reflections on the lake.

They lasted around 20 minutes. Before the competition started last night, a Lake of Dreams show was performed by previous competition winners and British Fire-works Champion of Champions Jubilee Fireworks. Ms Lowry added: “The Lake of Dreams show was beautiful.”
