Flagship fleet of tourist buses just the ticket for magical tour of Capital of Culture

A NEW tourist bus route has been launched for Capital of Culture celebrations, to help link Liverpool’s main attractions and events during the year.

A fleet of new single deckers will hit the streets ofŠ the city on Sunday, and it will mean visitors and local people can travel between 08 events at opposite ends of the city.

The route will travel past land-marks including the Philharm-onic Hall, the Cavern Quarter, the Liver Buildings and the Albert Dock and will run every 10 minutes, and cost one flat fare.

The buses are decorated with Liverpool images including the Beatles and both city cathedrals.

It is hoped the new S1 service, launched by Merseytravel and Arriva, will form a major part of the city’s 2008 celebrations, offering visitors an easy and convenient way to take in the Liverpool’s celebrated landmarks.

Phil Stone, managing director of Arriva North West and Wales, said: “With Merseytravel’s support we have been able to provide Liverpool with a flagship service to be proud of. The city will be the focus of attention during 2008 and we want as many people as possible to enjoy all its famous views and landmarks.” The daily service starts at Lime Street Station and takes around 40 minutes to circle the city. Although it has been planned for 2008, Arriva hope it will continue to run after events have finished as a long term route.

Cllr Denis Knowles, chairman of Merseytravel’s Merseytram and Bus Committee, said: “Ensuring people can get to and from events, venues and attractions will be vital if we are to help make Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture celebrations a true success story.” The Arriva flat fare of £1.40 will apply for the S1 service and all existing Merseytravel and Arriva Day and Weekly Tickets will also be valid. Also, 08 cardholders will be able to travel for just £1.
