Giving up for the sake of the grandchildren

GRANDMOTHER of two Vera O’Hare had smoked for 40 years when she decided to quit.

Mrs O’Hare, 63, from Alwyn Street, Aigburth, said: “I gave up two years ago, when my second grandchild, Ruby, was born.

“It was New Year and I just thought ‘I don’t want to smoke around her.

“My other granddaughter, Sophie, is 10 and she hated me smoking, so I did for the both of them.”

Mrs O’Hare, who lives with her husband Kevin, visited the Fag Ends drop-in sessions in both Aigburth and Garston.

There they showed her different techniques and devices, including an inhaler-like pipe which delivers nicotine, at the same time, monitoring breathing.

She said: “I used what they call a pipe for a while and then just got by with help from the service.

“I feel great, I can taste food properly now and haven’t got ill at all, which can happen when you first give up.

“My husband is a non smoker and much prefers it now.”
