PUMPKINS weighing more than 600lbs helped raise cash for the North West Air Ambulance on Saturday.

Now in its 13th year, the annual Mere Brow Giant Pumpkin competition, held at Homestead Farm's Shop, on Wiggins Lane, in Ormskirk, raised more than £1,200.

There were 21 contestants and the winning pumpkin, grown by Gerrard Wright, from Tarleton, weighed in at 640lbs.

Organiser Trevor Wilson said: “We had a really successful day and raised quite a bit more money than in previous years – it normally stands at £600 to £800.

“We hope we have the same success next year.”
