M56 at Preston Brook

Two children were killed while crossing a motorway, police said today.

The boys, aged six and seven, were crossing the M56 at Preston Brook, near Runcorn, Cheshire, at around 7.20pm last night.

Cheshire Police said the boys, from the Murdishaw area of Runcorn, were pushing motor scooters across the Chester-bound carriageway when they were struck.

Officers have said three cars were involved in the tragedy. The two boys were pronounced dead at the scene. Nobody else was injured.

Hundreds take to the streets of Liverpool in opposing marches

HUNDREDS of people took part in British National Party and anti-racism marches in the city centre today. There was a huge police presence throughout the day as BNP supporters and their opponents took to the streets of Liverpool.  The two groups were kept apart by Merseyside Police officers on foot, on horseback and in CCTV vans. Last weekend 13 British National Party (BNP) members were arrested on suspicion of giving out racist material near Whitechapel, Liverpool. Today Merseyside Police said they had been released without charge after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.  Photographs to follow.   Read
