THE father of seven-year-old Kieran Coupe last night called for fencing to be erected to stop other children wandering on to the motorway.
Colin Lambert said once he had come to terms with his son’s death he would campaign for a secure fence to be put along the edge of the M56 motorway and danger signs to act as a warning.
He also revealed there had been a number of deaths and injuries on a railway line close to Blyth Close, and said it was time for these areas to be properly secured.
Mr Lambert said: “Kieran had been warned not to go down to the motorway. My sister lives by the motorway and he had been told not to go past her house.
“I look around and everything is fenced off – but not the motorway.
“There are even 12ft railings around Kieran’s school when that is relatively safe, yet nothing to stop children from walking onto something as deadly as the motorway.
“There should be a fence or a danger sign at least.
“All there is is a small wooden fence that is broken in places. Any child can get through it or climb over it. Kieran had good road sense. It was getting dark and he may have been lost.
“He was scared of the dark.
“We desperately need something to stop any other child from finding themselves on the hard shoulder either on purpose or by mistake.
“Something has got to be done.
“They just shouldn't be able to get on there at all.”
