5.40pm – Mr Lambert became increasingly concerned for his son and asked his brother to help search for him.
6pm – The brothers were joined by 12 neighbours who extended the search to woodland behind the close and a grassed area known locally as “The Valley.”
At the same time, a police search had been launched. Witnesses reported seeing police helicopters overhead.
Approximately 7.15pm – police receive a number of 999 calls from motorists who have reported seeing the two boys on the hard shoulder of the M56.
It is understood they were on the Preston Brook side of the motorway attempting to cross the westbound carriageway.
7.20pm – The boys were hit by three saloon cars and killed instantly.
7.25pm – Ambulance crews who had rushed to the scene pronounced the children dead.
The motorway was closed between Junction 11 and 12 for several hours.
