Rhys Jones murder: car park witness comes forward

A potential new witness to the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones has come forward after a reconstruction on Crimewatch.

The man said he was in the car park of the Fir Tree pub in Croxteth, Liverpool, when the youngster was shot on August 22.

Crimewatch renewed appeals for a woman in a red car to come forward whom Police believe may have seen the killer.

Detectives are also looking for a boy, aged 13 or 14, who was outside the pub shortly before Rhys was gunned down.

The boy, who was riding a silver BMX bike, also attended a vigil at Croxteth Country Park on Sunday September 2.

He had fair hair and was wearing a white T-shirt and grey trousers.

The identity of a teenager, known to be a prime suspect in the case, today remained on a popular website.

The boy has been identified as the killer despite a request from Merseyside Police that the name be taken off the site.

Since yesterday, the number of people viewing the webpage has risen from around 9,000 to more than 10,300.

Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly, who is leading the investigation into the murder, said: “People keeping naming the killer is not helpful.”
