Lime Street gateway
LIVERPOOL city centre eyesore Concourse House is to be wrapped in huge banners advertising Capital of Culture year.
The derelict 13-storey tower, once voted Liverpool’s worst grot spots, is awaiting demolition as part of multi- million pound improvements to Lime Street station.
But the building will not be demolished before the end of the year, so regeneration officials have decided to mask it from the view of the many tourists travelling through the station and visiting nearby St George’s Hall.
Two sides of Concourse House are likely to be wrapped in adverts for Capital of Culture, while the other two will probably feature commercial promotions.
If the deal is finalised, the eyesore will hopefully should vanish from view later this month.
Government body English Partnerships finally won its long battle to demolish Concourse House and the shops beneath it earlier this year.
Some shopkeepers had launched a legal bid to halt the scheme, but a public square will now be created in front of the station and its Victorian facade will be restored.
Originally, it was hoped the scheme would be ready for the start of 2008.
