A NEW sexual health clinic is being opened to combat a huge rise in infections in Liverpool.
The walk-in clinic on the first floor of the NHS centre on Great Charlotte Street will be a one-stop shop for sexual health services, including contraception, disease testing and treatment for some of the most common infections.
Liverpool PCT has set up the service in the face of figures showing cases of gonorrhoea at the city’s Royal Genito Urinary Medicine department went up by 1032%, chlamydia by 253%, herpes by 23% and genital warts by 65% between 1995 and 2005.
Julie Kelly, Liverpool PCT Public Health Specialist for Sexual Health said: “Liverpool in common with the rest of England continues to see a large increase in levels of poor sexual health and a rise in the number of people seeking advice and treatment from sexual health services.
“For example, cases of chlamydia infection are rising.
“Part of the reason for this increase may be because we are running a very effective chlamydia screening programme for 15 – 24 year olds and subsequently people, who were unaware they had an infection, are being advised and treated.”
All services at the clinic are free and confidential to men and women of all ages and will operate on a walk-in basis.
The clinic will be open seven days a week from Monday, November 5.
