Climate change: Lights go out in Liverpool
MORE than 30 of Liverpool’s most fam-ous landmarks were plunged into darkness last night – but this time it was not because of a power failure.
The one-hour black-out was to raise aware-ness of climate change.
Among buildings taking part were Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Hall, the Three Graces at the Pier Head, and the new Beetham Tower and Unity Buildings.
Around 800 homes signed up to take part in the Lights Out Liverpool event by turning off non-essential lights and appliances.
The city council’s executive member for the environment, Cllr Berni Turner, said: “We had a fantastic re-sponse from people all keen to do their bit and really make a difference to the future of our planet.
“Lights Out Liverpool is a symbolic event designed to encourage people to turn off lights when they leave a room, make sure their TV isn’t left on standby and printers, photocopiers and computers are turned off at work.”
