Teammates’ applause a fitting tribute to boy who died in mountain plunge

Friends of Liam Costello applaud in his memory

YOUNG footballers joined in a minute’s applause for friend and teammate Liam Costello, who died after falling from a mountain in North Wales.

Members of junior teams – including his side, the Woolton Warriors – met at Camp Hill playing fields, Woolton, for the special remembrance service.

Liam’s parents, Pat and Liam, arrived with their son, Tom, eight, for the football team’s training session and ceremony conducted by Fr Desmond Keegan, parish priest from Our Lady Bishop Eton church, in Wavertree.

Liam, 11, from Childwall, was walking with his father and brother Tom on October 26 when he slipped from a ridge on Snowdon and fell 200ft, suffering severe head injuries.

The Everton fan’s father, who set up the junior team, said: “Everybody at the club has been so supportive and I along with my wife Pat and son Tom will be coming to the service to help keep Liam’s memory alive – it is a celebration of his life. We are taking each day one at a time.

“About 800 people have come through our door – friends from all over the country – and that has given us strength to keep going.”

The team’s chairman, Dave Woods, added: “We wanted to remember Liam and thought a service like this was the best way.”
