Mersey tunnels delay warning to drivers

MERSEYTRAVEL last night assured cross-river motorists that they have no plans to close both Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnels at the same time.

A series of routine maintenance and engineering works are planned.

The Queensway (Birkenhead) tunnel was closed last night from 10pm until 6-30am. It will close tonight, tomorrow and Thursday nights as well – from 10pm until 6-30am. Traffic will be diverted to Kingsway (the Wallasey tunnel).

A further 28-day notice has been issued for Monday, November 26 to Thursday, November 29.

In the Kingsway Tunnel there will be slight delays overnight in the Liverpool to Wallasey tube tonight and on Thursday, November 8 from 9.45am to 3.30pm for maintenance work. In addition there will be slight delays in the Wallasey to Liverpool tube from 9.45am to 3.30pm today and Thursday, November 8 in the offside lane only.
