THEY arrived in Liverpool on a banana boat from the Far East on a mission that will transform the landscape of the city centre.
More than 100 different sized replicas of Superlambanana are to form one of the zaniest and most spectacular forms of public art around Liverpool during culture year.
After leaving the docks, the first shipment of 30 of them – in various sizes – were placed in a 40ft container at Bruntwood's The Plaza, the old Littlewood's building, in Old Hall Street.
Manchester has adopted a similar idea by placing decorative cows in the city centre.
Liverpool went one better with an invasion of Superlambananas inspired by a Japanese artist whose first models stand guard outside the Liverpool John Moores University learning resource centre in Tithebarn Street.
Sally-Ann Wilkinson, direc-tor of Wild in Art, coordinator of the project, is delighted to welcome the Superlambananas to Liverpool. She said the aim is that local artists will come up with designs for artwork on the Superlambananas, with the works on display for 10 weeks from next June.
