£10m to prevent binge drinking

AN EXTRA £10m will be spent on addressing Liverpool’s binge drinking culture, health officials announced yesterday.

Last month, the Daily Post revealed the city has the highest alcohol related hospital admis- sions in the country, and the fresh funds will help to address the root causes of excessive alcohol consumption.

Liverpool Primary Care trust’s plans will target schools, work- places and night spots in a bid to change the way alcohol is perceived.

Schemes include:

More drink treatment services, after health managers admitted one in 10 people were not getting the help they needed.

The country’s first alcohol "tool kits" for six to 11-year-olds to help them learn about the dangers of alcohol. A special interactive DVD and teacher’s booklet will feature a child called Claire, whose older sister is trying to make her drink and smoke.

Police and paramedic patrols to target binge drinking hotspots.
