A MAJOR £1m project to revitalise a two-mile stretch of promenade in Wirral has got under way.
The work will focus on the entrance to the prom close to the Seacombe Ferry terminal/Spaceport with a new pedestrian-friendly public space and improvements to the embankments behind the promenade.
Other improvements will involve replacing dilapidated railings and restoring the historic Dr Poggi's shelter at Vale Park, New Brighton.
The shelter is named after the former owner of New Brighton College, which stood on the site of the present shelter, in the mid-1850s.
Jo Hayes, Mersey Waterfront’s Pride in our Promenades co-ordinator, said: “We want to create a real family atmosphere, creating a more accessible and attractive place where people from both sides of the Mersey can come to enjoy the coastline.
“That’s why local residents have been heavily involved, including community walks and school visits.”
The scheme is the second part of Mersey Waterfront’s £8.5m Pride in our Promenades project.
The first £1.4m phase at Otterspool in South Liverpool was completed earlier this year, with Seacombe and New Brighton due to be completed next summer.
