Pregnant mother with a drug problem killed herself

A HEAVILY pregnant mother of six was found hanging from a dressing gown cord attached to the handle of a bathroom door, an inquest in Wirral heard.

Alison Haji, 39, of Seabank Road, Wallasey, was discovered by her partner, Ashley Gibson, after he had returned home to their top-floor fat.

Initially, police suspected foul play and spent weeks checking the knots used to create the ligature from which Ms Haji was found hanging.

But the inquest yesterday at Wallasey Town Hall heard that subsequent post mortem and police investigation had found no evidence of any third party involvement in Mrs Haji’s death.

The coroner’s court was told Mr Gibson returned home late on Saturday Noverber 26, 2005, but was unable to get into the flat and slept for several hours on the landing outside the door.

Around 7am on Sunday, November 27, he banged on the door again and then forced his way in where he found his partner hanging from the bathroom door.

The coroner’s court was told a post mortem revealed Ms Haji, who had been born in Preston, had been 24 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

She also had six other children, three of whom had been adopted and three others were in care.

The inquest was told the pathologist also found evidence of drug use by Ms Haji prior to her death and an alcohol level which would have been twice the legal limit for driving.

The cause of death was given as hanging and heroin and methadone poisoning.

The coroner for Wirral, Christopher Johnson formally recorded a verdict that Alison Haji killed herself.
