Tears as woman is jailed for attack in city centre pub

A YOUNG mother who launched a violent attack on an acquaintance in a city centre pub was jailed yesterday.

Mikela Cheshire wept as she was led to the cells after Judge Brian Lewis told her, “It was a thoroughly disgraceful attack and the sort of thing which the courts have indicated we are determined to stop.

“Many people come to this city to enjoy themselves, see the sights and so on, and they should not be confronted with this sort of drunken thuggery in public houses and on pavements outside.”

He added that photographs of the marks and bruises to the victim’s face showed the persistence of the attack.

Cheshire, 25, of Snowberry Road, Huyton, was the subject of community orders at the time of the attack for assaulting the police just four weeks earlier.

The judge told her when she is freed those orders will continue.

Cheshire, who pleaded guilty to assaulting Tracey Bradley causing actual bodily harm, was jailed for 56 days.

Geoffrey Fryar, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court that at lunchtime on December 12 last year the victim was in the Penny Farthing pub in Rowe Street with her mother and boyfriend.

Cheshire came in with two men and joined Ms Bradley, whom she knew, and her group.

Ms Bradley’s mother left and she went to the toilet and Cheshire came in and an argument started over a friend of Cheshire’s.

Cheshire threw a glass at the wall and as Ms Bradley left the toilet Cheshire became abusive and ran towards her. She grabbed her by the hair and they fell to the floor.

The struggle continued out into the street and Cheshire punched her forcibly in the mouth while she was leaning against a wall.

Another punch knocked her to the ground where she was kicked and punched to the head and face and was left in extreme pain, said Mr Fryar.

The victim was taken to hospital and Cheshire was traced through CCTV footage and arrested.

Desmond Lennon, defending, said that Cheshire had turned to alcohol after suffering a tragedy. She had also realised that she could not give her six-year-old son the stability he needs and he is now in foster care.

She is sorry for the assault and has been responding to probation programmes imposed a year ago. She has never received a custodial sentence, he added.
