A GIANT sculpture has taken pride of place in the lobby of a Liverpool city centre hotel in time for Capital of Culture year.

Fallen Angel is made out of lime-stone and dominates the foyer of the Crowne Plaza hotel.

The artwork was created by sculptor Duncan Elliott, whose grandparents were from Liverpool.

He said at the unveiling last night: “I wanted to convey the idea of fighting back, of resurgence.

“It’s about the Liverpool character and the struggle with authority.”

Phil Redmond, deputy chairman of the Liverpool Culture Company, congratu-lated the hotel for commissioning the artwork.

He said: “This fits into the whole ethos of people taking over the concept of Capital of Culture.”

David Wade-Smith, chairman of tourism at the Mersey Partnership, said: “Art needs to be put in highly public spaces such as hotel lobbies. It attracts comment and people remember it.”
