Lancashire Day pushes back the boundaries to where they once were

COUNTY lines were drawn yesterday, as Merseysiders with an eye for tradition celebrated Lancashire Day.

A proclamation was read out in many towns including Southport and Ormskirk, regardless of current boundaries.

Lancashire Day is celebrated on November 27, the anniversary of the county’s first elected representatives summon- ed to Westminster by King John in 1295.

Chris Dawson, from Great Crosby, is chairman of Friends of Real Lancashire, which campaigns to keep the county name alive.

He said: “No legislation has ever changed the boundaries – from its southern boundary on the banks of the River Mersey to its northern boundary on the River Duddon and the west bank of Winder- mere. It is indisputable that the county still exists, and this has been confirmed many times by Government.”
