Lottery vote will decide on Merseyside cycle scheme

CYCLISTS in the region could benefit from a new footpath and cycle link if a national project wins Lottery funding to regenerate sustainable transport around the country.

The Connect2 project, consisting of 79 cycling and walking schemes UK-wide, is one of four bids in the running for a £50m boost from the Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions.

A public vote will decide the winner. Online voting began this week at www.the peoples50million.org.uk, and phone voting begins on December 7. The closing date is December 10.

On Merseyside, the projects are to create a safe and direct footpath and cycle path between Everton Park and the Mersey in Liverpool, and in Knowsley to bring back into use the former Cronton Mineral Line as a shared pedestrian and cycle route.

Cllr Eddie Clein, chairman of the Liverpool Cycle Forum, said: “We’ve our fingers crossed that the Sustrans bid is successful.

“The Merseyside schemes have the potential to open up attractive routes for cyclists and pedestrians, both for leisure purposes and for easier, car-free commuting. The schemes will certainly also help regenerate local communities.

“I would hope local people get behind the schemes and vote for Sustans.”

The four contenders for the £50m will each be featured on ITV1 programmes and when all have been aired the phone polling will begin.

The programme will be broadcast on December 4.
