LOAN sharks in Wirral are to be targeted by a specialist investigation squad from Birmingham to deal with the “hidden crimes” they inflict on communities.
The scheme, which is already set to take place in Liverpool, is expected to be extended across the river if senior councillors from the borough approve.
The Task Force from the Midlands was set up three years ago and has proved highly successful in targeting those involved in illegal lending.
Head of Wirral’s Trading Standards John Malone said they provided a service his department did not have the capacity to do.
He added: “It’s a resource for something we do not have the expertise to deal with in terms of the absolute focus needed – such as providing the 24-hour hotline.
“The only way to properly deal with these people is to have a dedicated team who are specialists.
“Birmingham have that. They have even had cases where they have been round to a victim’s house within two hours and moved them into witness protection, then targeted the loan shark.”
It was difficult to estimate the extent of the problem in Wirral, but would not be surprised if it was more extensive than anyone realised, he said.
Mr Malone explained: “It’s difficult for us to investigate it. I think there will be problems uncovered in Wirral.
“This is one of the hidden problems of our society.”
As part of the scheme, there are also financial inclusion officers who will help those communities without access to lending, helping to set up credit unions.
The new project is being led in Merseyside by Liverpool council, which announced last month it was bringing in the Birm-ingham team to help deal with the problem.
Under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, the elite team can obtain search warrants, hold evidence and arrest and detain suspects. They also have the resources to carry out extensive surveillance and work closely with police at the highest levels.
The Government has provided a £1.2m package for the enforcement teams for cities across northern England.
It is hoped the team could be up and running in the area by the endnext month.
A report to Wirral Council cabinet will be presented to councillors this week recommending the officers from Birmingham be given the necessary powers to operate in Wirral.
