Special school moves to new site

A SPECIAL school for boys with behavioural and emotional problems has been given permission to move to a new site.

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee yesterday approved plans for Lower Lee Special School to move about 400 yards down Beaconsfield Road in Woolton.

A new two-storey school and five residential blocks to accommodate up to 48 boys will be built on the site of the former Harold Magnay Special School, which closed a number of years ago.

The scheme had attracted significant opposition from nearby residents who were worried about noise, security, and impact on residential amenity.

The majority of boys, who are aged 11 to 16, will stay at the site Monday to Fridays.

Headteacher Mark Christian told the committee that in 20 years the school had never had a complaint from residents living nearby.

The school was rated good in its latest Ofsted inspection.

“We have a very good staff pupil ratio and run a tight ship in terms of supervision of pupils.”

He said the current building was outdated and a new school was needed.
