A CAMPAIGN to try and make people think about how much they are drinking will be up and running across Wirral this weekend.
Wirral DAAT (Drugs and Alcohol Action Team) is launching “How much is too much?” – a four-week advertising campaign targeting 18-30-year-olds.
The aim is to advise party-goers and clubbers out over the Festive period about the risks and harm associated with excessive alcohol consumption.
Mindy Rutherford, Strategy Manager of Wirral Drug and Alcohol Action Team, said people will be asked to think ‘How much is too much?’ through adverts on buses, bus stops, railway stations, GP surgeries and youth and community centres throughout Wirral.
She said: “The adverts will be very visual, high impact and will help people to think about the health and behavioural risks of drinking too much alcohol.”
The numbers of people accessing specialist alcohol services in Wirral has increased by 54% over the last three years.
Based on the numbers who were in contact with treatment services in 2005/06, Wirral has 5,717 males and 2,053 females thought to have had an alcohol use disorder.
This latest campaign is part of a joint partnership approach to help reduce binge drinking in Wirral, and will be closely supported by Wirral Primary Care Trust, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Wirral Alcohol Service and Merseyside Police.
Birkenhead Neighbourhood Police Inspector, Rachael Wilson said: “Binge drinking can fuel violence and disorder and make people more likely to be a victim of crime.
“We are keen to get the safe, sensible drinking message across to people who enjoy visiting Birkenhead’s pubs and clubs.”
