THE Liver Birds have won the first stage of our Liverpool Map campaign.
The iconic symbols will represent the city on our map, which will become a finished piece of art at the end of the campaign.
The winners got 53% of your vote and were firm favourites from the beginning.
The closest contender was Liverpool waterfront with 35% but every other choice, including the Superlambanana and a purple wheelie bin gained less than 4% of the public’s approval.
Daily Post editor Mark Thomas said: “With their historic significance it is no surprise the Liverbirds have won.
“They are instantly recognisable by people all over the world and I am sure will look fantastic on the finished artwork.
“But it does not stop here, we still need you nominations for places to go on the map.
“Tell us why you, and your neighbourhood, deserve to be considered part of Liverpool. Don’t assume you are in just because you pay your council tax to Liverpool City Council. This is your map. But it's up to you to put yourself on it.”
The project is part of Open Culture – a platform to enable the people of Liverpool to engage with the celebrations for 2008. It is collaboration between Radio City, BBC Radio Merseyside, Liverpool Echo and Daily Post, Phil Redmond with the ICDC, and Liverpool Culture Company.
Phil Redmond said: “It seems very fitting that a project attempting to define part of the Scouse character, should have the Liver Bird as its motif.
“To Scousers they are more important than the Cockney’s Bow Bells.”
We still want you to nominate locations to be included, or excluded, in the Liverpool map. You can:
