Home building high in city

A RECORD number of new homes are being built in Liverpool, with the highest ever number of planning applications granted.

Liverpool city council said more than 3,000 new homes were built in the city in the year 2006/7, with permission granted on another 22,000 planning applications - dramatically up on last year’s record level of 17,000.

More than 7,000 of the planning applications are earmarked to take place in areas designated ‘Zones of Opportunity’ or inner city priority areas.

Councillor Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool’s executive member for housing and neighbourhood services, said: “This shows the high level of confidence in Liverpool.

“The city council is committed to improving the city’s housing stock. We are not only raising standards of accommodation in the private sector but working with housing associations and registered social landlords so all people can have the homes they deserve.

“And the city’s 17,000 council tenants will also get £300 million of investment over the next five years after an overwhelming majority of council tenants voted to transfer their homes to a new landlord, Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH).”
