Hundreds of Liverpool fans miss match as crash shuts M40

A SERIOUS accident on the M40 led to hundreds of Liverpool fans missing last night’s Carling Cup match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The southbound carriageway of the motorway was completely closed near High Wycombe, Bucks, after the two-vehicle collision yesterday afternoon, leaving cars and coach parties stranded.

The collision, involving two cars, happened shortly before 4pm, between junctions 4 and 3. Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Large queues of traffic formed before being diverted off the motorway by traffic police.

Among those affected were Radio City’s commentary team, Steve Hothersall and John Aldridge, who were forced to turn back, after being held up in traffic for up to three hours. Mr Hothersall said: “This was the first game we have ever missed.

“The traffic queues were about eight or nine miles long, and there was no way we could have made it to the match.”

It left the radio station with no commentator at the match and having to rely on studio updates on the game, which Liverpool lost 2-0.
