A GROUP of nine German shepherd puppies are about to start placements that will see then graduate as police dogs.
The puppies, born on November 22, are about to be sent to the homes of volunteers, who care for them during training.
After completing training, the dogs will become registered police dogs and their work will include searching for missing people, apprehending criminals, sniffing out evidence at crime scenes, and visiting schools.
Inspector Neil Davies, head of the dog section, said: “All our dogs have an important role to play in policing. Registered police dogs help track down offenders or even vulnerable people and also assist with crowd control at large events.
“Some even have extended training and can work alongside officers in the firearms department.”
The litter’s two female puppies will be placed in a volunteer's home until they reach maturity and can join the force's breeding programme.
