SCHOOLS in Wirral beat the national GCSE pass rate and have among the lowest truancy rates in the region.
Pupils gaining the crucial five passes with maths and English stood at 48.30% across the district – 2.3% higher than average.
A change of guard at the top of the tables saw Wirral Grammar boys and girls schools both outperform Birkenhead High and Birkenhead School.
Wirral Grammar School for Girls headteacher Elaine Cogan said: “I am so pleased for my girls: we work hard as a school to give our girls confidence and the ability to succeed.
“Today’s league tables show our pupils are able to take their place as the leading young women of tomorrow. It is a tremendous example for our pupils in Year 11 and Year 13 who are coming up to taking their exams this year, but I am sure they will rise to the challenge set by pupil’s last year.
“My thanks, of course, to the staff not just for their expertise but for their hard work and commitment. Together with the continued support of governors and parents, it all goes to making the school successful.”
Just 0.9% of pupils were absent without consent last year compared with 1.4% nationally.
Councillor Phil Davies, cabinet member for education for Wirral Council, said: “We are pleased the important results for Wirral’s GCSEs, 5 grades at A*-C including maths and English, continue to surpass the national pass rate and are very proud of our pupils for all they have achieved. We look forward to even better things for both GCSE and A-Levels next year.”
