Men deny Rainford human fireball murder

Police at the scene off Blindfoot Road, Rainford where Monika Szmecht was attacked and burned

TWO men accused of killing a Polish woman, who was turned into a human fireball on a remote country lane, today denied her murder.

Philip Savin, of Chester Avenue, Bootle, and David Clarke, of Walton Village, are both alleged to have murdered waitress Monika Szmecht.

She was a 20-year-old immigrant from Poland who had been living at Wellesbourne Place, Norris Green.

She died in Whiston hospital after she was set on fire and dumped in a lay-by on Blindfoot Road, Rainford, at 9pm on June 11. She staggered 150 yards to a isolated cottage to get help.

29-year-old Savin and Clarke, 45, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link equipment from prison. They were both further remanded in custody to await their trial beginning on April 2.

A third man, Anthony Clarke, 26, of Halsey Crescent, West Derby has already pleaded not guilty to murdering her when he appeared in court in September and has been remanded to the same date.
