PROMINENT Merseysiders are stating their cases for representation in our Liverpool Map campaign.
Freeman of the city and solicitor Rex Makin has nominated his home district of Woolton to be included.
Mr Makin sees south Liverpool villages as an integral part of Liverpool’s identity as a city and says their own autonomy helps to add to the rich fabric.
He said: “Woolton is one of the oldest villages and holds the very foundations of Liverpool.
“It is an integral part of the city and still has a life as a village, which is very important.
“Areas such as Wavertree and Childwall are the same, they have a centre and a warmth – they add to Liverpool’s uniqueness but also have their own identities.
“It is so important to have constituent areas within the city to keep it individual and special.”
The Liverpool Map project aims to define the city’s boundaries geographically, historically and culturally to celebrate 2008.
It will show where the people of Merseyside think Liverpool’s borders are and it will also highlight Liverpool’s local, national and global influences.
The final outcome will be an artistic representation of the Liverpool Map, which will be donated to Museum of Liverpool as part of the 2008 celebrations.
Last month you the readers voted for the Liver birds to be the city’s motif on the map, but we still want your nominations for areas to be included and excluded.
The project is part of Open Culture, a platform to enable the people of Liverpool to engage with the celebrations for 2008. It is collaboration between Radio City, BBC Radio Merseyside, Liverpool Echo and Daily Post, Phil Redmond with the ICDC, and Liverpool Culture Company.
Phil Redmond said: “Culture should be attached to communities, not just institutions or organisations. All culture derives from people. All people are shaped by where they come from. It’s a reflection of shared lifestyle.”
