SHOPPERS in Wirral are being warned to be vigilant by police after a spate of “dipper” thefts.
Officers say that over the last few weeks there have been a series of thefts from people in Birkenhead town centre.
Purses have been stolen from handbags and in some cases handbags have even been stolen from the handles of prams.
The thefts have been occurring in stores and on the street.
Birkenhead Neighbourhood Inspector, Rachel Wilson said: “We are working closely with the town centre security team and we have police officers in plain clothes on patrol to address this problem.
“I would also like to remind people to be on their guard when out and about shopping in Birkenhead, and to be aware of where their purses and wallets are and if they have a handbag make sure it is closed and secure.
“Don’t use your mobile phone in crowded places as opportunist thieves could grab them.
“Finally, don’t leave your bags unattended anywhere and be aware when attending cash points, make sure you have secured any cash before leaving the scene.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or Birkenhead Neighbourhood on 0151 709 6010.
