Wirral play park battle brings touch of deja vu

A WIRRAL councillor whose career started with a battle to save a local park has found herself fighting to ensure its survival again.

Conservative Leah Fraser said the campaign to raise funds to create a play area for Wallacre Park in Wallasey prompted her to become involved in local politics.

But now the vandals have struck, and she is fighting for the park once more..

She said: “This is the park where I started in politics.

“We set up a friends group for the park and around £90,000 was raised, with endless meetings to get this park perfect.

“And then the yobs came ... They have pulled up the specialist flooring, and it’s pretty grim.”

She said she had been pressing the council to repair the damage and improve facilities both there, and at Urmson Road which she said had also been closed in because of vandalism.

But she added: “Both these play areas were restored and improved after the public raised almost £100,000 for new equipment. The council gave an assurance they would maintain the areas; they have reneged on that.”

A council spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, due to severe vandalism to the rubber floor surfacing, we have had to close off certain play areas.

“Due to the winter weather and cold temperatures, we can not replace the rubber flooring as it will not set correctly.”
