A WOMAN from Wirral who decided to do a first aid course in case her young sons ever got injured has been awarded Citizen of the Year award for her services to the Red Cross.

At the 30th Annual General Meeting of Wallasey Civic Society held at Wallasey Town Hall, the Mayor of Wirral Cllr Phil Gilchrist presented the 2007 award to Christiane Ambler.

She said she was delighted to accept the award and thanked the Wallasey Civic Society for nominating her.

She said: “I would like to think that in accepting this award, I am accepting it on behalf of all the Red Cross volunteers in Merseyside in recognition of the work that they do within the community.”

Christiane, from Wallasey, said she decided in 1989 to do a First Aid course just in case her two young sons ever got hurt playing games.

At the end of the course one of the trainers suggested that she join the Red Cross.

She became a group leader and has been Centre Organiser at Wallasey since 1995.
