A LIVERPOOL man is in a critical condition in hospital today after plunging 80ft down a Lancashire quarry.
Christopher Walsh, of Greenheys Road, Toxteth, was rescued by the emergency services yesterday.
He was found by police at the bottom of Anglezarke Quarry in Rivington, near Chorley.
Mr Walsh, who is believed to be in his 40s, was said to be shouting for help. He suffered multiple injuries to his head and body.
He was flown by air ambulance to Royal Blackburn infirmary, where he was last night being treated for multiple injuries, after being rescued by Bolton Mountain Rescue team.
A spokesman for Lancashire Ambulance Service said his injuries were serious, describing him as being in a critical but stable condition.
He said: “The man was taken to the Royal Blackburn infirmary with head, chest and abdominal injuries, as well as injuries to his pelvic, left arm and left leg.”
A Lancashire police spokeswoman said Mr Walsh, who was described by police as a keen walker and climber, had fallen from the top of the disused quarry.
She said: “We were alerted to the accident at 1pm on Sunday. We attended the scene near Rivington where a male could be heard shouting for help.
“The man was found at the quarry base. The exact circumstances of the fall are not known at this time but it appears to be an accident.
“His injuries are serious but it is not known how critical they are at this stage.”
Anglezarke Quarry lies at the bottom of Anglezarke moor and is popular with walkers and climbers.
