Ofsted boost for colleges

VOCATIONAL courses at two colleges in Merseyside have been praised by Ofsted.

Agriculture and engineering post-16 courses have been singled out for their success in equipping students with relevant industry skills.

Hugh Baird College, Bootle and Wirral Metropolitan College topped Ofsted’s post-16 good practice survey.

Inspectors made more than 100 visits to colleges to assess standards of education and training enabling students to move straight into employment.

Hugh Baird College was praised for the good use of a ‘Secret Garden’ floristry shop in the college reception area.

Inspectors found the commercial operation of the shop helped build confidence and customer care among students.

Wirral College’s strong links with local businesses was noted alongside engaging teaching and practical exercises.

Dr Jette Burford, principal of Hugh Baird College, said: “We’re delighted to receive such high praise..”

Christine Gilbert, chief inspector for education, children’s services and skills, said: “The best colleges in each vocational area had common features.

“They all had strong links to industry and related classroom learning to the demands of the workplace. They worked hard to ensure high achievement levels.”
