A MAN died of his injuries after he fell to the carriageway at the mouth of the Mersey Tunnel.
Wirral Coroner’s Court heard that Angus Kilbane, 37, climbed over the barrier at Wheatland Lane, more than 40ft above the road surface, on November 16.
Witnesses said he gripped the rail behind him and faced the road.
Witness Karen Hamilton said he “just let go” and fell.
Mr Kilbane, who had suffered psychiatric problems, was transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital and later to Broadgreen Cardiothoracic Centre for heart surgery.
He remained in intensive care for some time, before a decision was taken by family members not to revive him.
He died on December 2.
Wirral Coroner Christopher Johnson recorded a verdict that the deceased had taken his own life.
