AN ELECTRO pop pioneer has nominated his home town to be included on the Liverpool Map.
Marc Almond, whose music career has spanned three decades after he rose to fame as part of 80s duo Soft Cell, thinks Southport is part of Liverpool’s “lineage”, and should be included in the Capital of Culture project.
He said: “Of course Southport is a town in its own right and with its own unique identity, much more than just a Liverpool suburb by the sea.
“Yet it remains an integral part of Merseyside and holds onto a strong connection to Liverpool.
“As a teenager, I went to Liverpool almost every week, taking the short train journey back and forth to see concerts by the stars of the time, or even just to walk around and feel like I’m part of a big city.
“Liverpudlians have always visited Southport, to spend a day by the sea, even though it rarely comes in.
“Southport and Liverpool have remained a part of each other, separate yet kindred. Southport has had a lasting influence on me and I definitely think it is part of the Liverpool lineage.”
The Liverpool Map project is aiming to define the city’s boundaries geographically, historically and culturally to celebrate 2008.
The new map will show where the people of Merseyside think Liverpool’s borders are and it will also highlight Liverpool’s local, national and global influences.
The final outcome will be an artistic representation of the Liv- erpool Map, which will be donat- ed to the Museum of Liverpool as part of the 2008 celebrations.
It is a collaboration between Radio City, BBC Radio Merseyside, Liverpool Echo and Daily Post, Phil Redmond with the ICDC, and Liverpool Culture Company.
You have until Friday to nominate a LOCAL area for inclusion or exclusion from the map. A full list of nominated areas will then be put forward and readers given the chance to formally vote for a nominated area.
The campaign will then move on to Liverpool’s global influence, when world locations will be given the chance to appear on the map.
* SEE next Monday’s Daily Post for a full list of nominated local areas and more information on how you can lodge your vote for an area to be included on the map.
