Liverpool city council named as worst in country

ST Helens received a clean bill of health with a four-star rating and assurance it is “improving well”.

None of its departments got less than three stars - with resources, benefits, culture and housing all getting the top mark - the council’s best-ever set of results.

Its use of taxpayers’ money was said to be the third-best in the whole country.

The Audit Commission also praised falling crime rates, regeneration, improved leisure facilities and obesity screening for young children. Although its recycling rate was below average.

Council leader Brian Spencer said: “This is the best inspection the council has ever had and excellent news for the people of St Helens.”
