POLICE stumbled upon one million ecstasy tablets after being called to a suspected burglary at a Liverpool flat.
Officers received a 999 call claiming a house in Olive Lane, Wavertree, was being broken into.
But when they arrived they found a sophisticated drug factory and two black binbags full of ecstasy.
The pills, recovered in what was today described as a “once in a career” bust, would be worth up to £5m on the streets.
Police had to call in a special team to retrieve a heavy tablet press from the house.
They also found two bags of white powder, believed to be cocaine, a sawn-off shotgun, and ammunition for different guns on top of the fridge in the kitchen.
The flat’s occupant handed himself into police this week after discovering he was wanted in connection with the find.
James Williams, 34, appeared at Liverpool magistrates’ court yesterday charged with possessing drugs with intent to supply, possessing of a prohibited firearm and possessing ammunition.
He spoke only to confirm his name and address during the short hearing and was remanded in custody.
Ian Black, neighbourhood inspector for Wavertree, said today: “Some officers will go through their whole careers without seeing this amount of drugs.
“This is a once in a career find.
“It is being celebrated and rightly so. I am delighted these drugs have been taken off the streets.
“If people know about drugs in their area I would urge them to contact us and we will do something about it.”
