Rhys Jones murder: Police claim 'significant progress' being made

"SIGNIFICANT progress” has been made in the Rhys Jones murder investigation, his inquest heard yesterday morning.

The 11-year-old was shot in the neck by a hooded gunman in Croxteth Park in August last year.

Despite a massive police operation and more than 20 arrests, no-one has been charged over the schoolboy’s killing.

Yesterday, an inquest into his death reopened in Liver- pool, and was told that Merseyside Police’s investig- ation was progressing well.

The five-minute hearing, which was attended by Rhys’s parents, Stephen and Melanie, was adjourned until April.

But addressing the leading detective, Superintendent Dave Kelly, Coroner Andre Rebello said: “I am pleased to see there has been significant progress and there are further lines that need clarifying.”

He asked if a further 10 weeks would give police enough time to advance the case.

Mr Kelly said: “I expect that we will make progress.”
