Guides from Europe celebrate World in One City

MORE than 7,500 Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows from around the UK and Europe descended on Liverpool at the weekend for their annual Thinking Day celebrations.

World in One City, which took place on Saturday, saw youngsters from across the country joined by visitors from Norway to learn about the city’s different cultures.

Hundreds of girls at a time took over a large number of iconic venues including the Albert Dock, St George’s Hall, the Liverpool and Metropolitan cathedrals and the city’s museums, to take part in different activities before congregating to perform at the new Echo Arena in a finale spectacular.

Nicola Mullen, of the event management team, said: “We’re all really excited about the World in One City event.

“There is a large proportion of girls and young women from the local area heading to Liverpool to take part in the celebrations and what better way to commemorate World in One City than to take over the European Capital of Culture.”

The international theme, led by professional artistic organisations such as Liverpool Lantern Company and Walk the Plank, was designed to reflect the diversity of the movement across the world.

North West chief commissioner Wendy Graham said: “Our World Thinking Day celebration will help these girls and young women to develop a better understanding of the cultures and traditions of members not only here in the UK but also worldwide.”

Guiding spans more than 140 countries with more than 10 million members and The World in One City is Girlguiding UK’s celebration of this.
